The building at 1700 Summit Avenue was originally built in 1936 by Richmond architect H. Carl Messerschmidt and is designated as contributing to the Scott's Addition Historic District. The structure was specifically built for Baker Equipment Engineering Company, who continued to occupy the space until recently. 1700 Summit Avenue is a one-story, brick and concrete factory designed in the Modern Movement style.

Through the Special Use Permit process, the building at 1700 Summit Avenue will house 89 upscale and contemporary apartments ranging in size from 475 – 860 square feet. The renovation process will use many green elements, such as using local manufacturers and using eco-conscious materials. The renovation will also make use of numerous skylights to illuminate the galleries, which encourage connectivity throughout the building.
